DIXFIELD – An 11-year-old boy died after a sand pile collapsed on him in a trench he had dug in his backyard, police said.
Lucas Dolloff dug the trench, which was about waist-deep, Police Chief Richard Pickett said. The boy climbed into the trench and was digging a small tunnel with a trowel when a pile of sand collapsed on him, Pickett said.
The boy’s father, James Dolloff, had left the house to run errands and couldn’t find his son in the house when he returned.
After the father found Lucas in the sand pile he attempted to revive him. Rescue personnel who were called to the scene also failed to resuscitate the boy, who was pronounced dead at a Rumford hospital Monday night.
