Label news analysis

When did the Bangor Daily News adopt its new policy of running op-ed pieces on the front page? Margaret Talev’s disjointed commentary on the 109th Congress, run under the screaming editorial headline “Congress’ failures historic” (BDN, Sept. 30-Oct. 1) belonged on the page with other opinion pieces from the likes of Charles Krauthammer or Molly Ivins.

The fact that I happen to agree with some of Talev’s criticisms of Congress’ track record in no way mitigates my feeling that it was a disservice to your readers to treat her piece as though it were news (and the lead news story, no less!). Many newspapers have adopted the policy of labeling accounts by journalists who wish to interpret the news from their perspective as “news analysis,” a policy that seems to be overdue at the Bangor Daily News.
