Bangor man struck by train on trestle

BANGOR – A 43-year-old Bangor man suffered extensive injuries Tuesday night after he was struck by a train while crossing a trestle over the Kenduskeag Stream.

The man, whom police would not identify Tuesday night pending notification of family, was taken by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center, according to Lt. Jeff Millard of the Bangor Police Department.

“His injuries were extensive,” Millard said, though he said it was not clear to him if the injuries were life-threatening.

No other information on the man’s condition was available as of press time late Tuesday. The accident remains under investigation by city and railroad police.

According to Millard, the accident occurred at 8:43 p.m. on a railroad trestle that runs over the stream from behind the Penobscot Plaza to a park on the other side. Pedestrians are prohibited from using it, he said.

Millard said the trestle on which the man was struck was the same one that a Brewer woman fell through, plunging into the stream, during the American Folk Festival in August.

The woman’s injuries required treatment in EMMC’s intensive care unit.
