The U.S. Coast Guard received a call that a flare had been shot off between Islesboro and Resolution Island in Penobscot Bay at 7:37 p.m. Sunday.
A helicopter was called from Cape Cod to search the area between Deer Isle and Islesboro in hopes of attracting another flare. The search was expected to last 45 minutes, said Petty Officer Joshua Ryan of Coast Guard Response. If nothing was found, a first-light search will be conducted this morning.
“Some people like to just go out and shoot off flares, but it’s an automatic response for us,” Ryan said Sunday night. “It is a distress signal and it puts us into business.”
