Alternative ways to view New England’s fall foliage

Hiking, biking and driving aren’t the only ways to get a glimpse of fall foliage. In northern New England, there’s no shortage of off-the-beaten-path opportunities for leaf peepers.

In Vermont

. The Green Mountain Flyer, a foliage train, makes twice-daily trips between Chester, Vt., and Bellows Falls, Vt., through Oct. 15. Cost: $17 for adults, $13 for children. For information, visit www.rails-vt.com.

. Stratton Mountain uses a ski lift gondola to offer rides to leaf peepers, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily through Oct. 9. The ride takes visitors to the peak of the mountain, where they can walk trails, see lookout points and visit the Stratton Mountain Fire Tower. Cost: $10 for adults, $6 for teenagers and senior citizens. For information, call (800) STRATTON or visit www.Stratton.com

. Stowe Soaring, located at Morrisville-Stowe State Airport in Morrisville, offers glider rides daily through Oct. 29 that provide dramatic views of Mount Mansfield, Mount Elmore and Mount Ascutney, among other things. Cost: $89 and up. For information, call (800) 898-7845 or visit www.stowesoaring.com.

In New Hampshire

. In North Conway, N.H., the Conway Scenic Railroad offers excursions in the Mount Washington Valley area. Trips range from an hour or two along the Saco River to all-day excursions through White Mountain National Forest. For an extra fee, passengers on the “notch train” can ride in a 1954 dome car. Riders climb stairs to sit in the dome, a glass bubble on top of the first-class car that offers spectacular views of the Saco River, the mountains and the foliage. Cost: $12 to $40, depending on the trip. For information, call (800) 232-5251 or visit www.conwayscenic.com.

In Maine

. Long Reach Cruises of Bath offers a two-hour lower Kennebec River cruise that focuses on lighthouses, foliage and seals. The trip, which runs Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 16, leaves from Maine Maritime Museum. Cost: $29.95 for adults, $12.95 for children 13 and under. For information, call (888) 538-6786 or visit www.longreachcruises.com.

. L.L. Bean offers a half-day fall foliage kayak tour in Casco Bay for novice kayakers who can learn to paddle while enjoying the coastal fall colors.
