Knife confiscated after 2-town fight

BAILEYVILLE – Police confiscated a knife Sunday after a fight broke out Sunday morning in Calais, allegedly between two men who were arguing.

It ended at the Woodland Food Mart on U.S. Route 1, also known as the Houlton Road, with five people on the ground and handcuffed by police.

Around 10 a.m., Baileyville police Officer William Lindsey was called to the food mart where he found five people arguing. Lindsay called for backup and ordered the people to the ground, where he handcuffed them. That’s when he found one knife, Police Chief Philip Harriman said Sunday.

Lindsey learned from the people that the argument began in Calais, but stopped after one of the men got into his car and left. The two people he was arguing with then got into their own car and followed the man to Baileyville.

“They both left in separate vehicles heading north on Route 1. One individual felt threatened, so he called his father’s residence and told him that he was being threatened by another individual,” Harriman said.

The two cars then arrived at the father’s house in Baileyville, where a fight broke out. “The fight broke up and the two individuals who had followed the man left the residence and drove over to the food mart parking lot where a fifth individual comes into the picture,” Harriman said.

The man and his father then walked over to the parking lot and another argument ensued. “At that point the officer arrived, separated them and began his investigation,” the chief said.

The incident remained under investigation Sunday night, and police expect several people will be charged.

Maine State Police and the Calais Police assisted.
