Authorities find 3 of four ATVs reported stolen

BELFAST – With the assistance of a Maine State Police aircraft, the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department is two steps closer to solving the case of the missing four-wheelers.

Deputy Matt Curtis and a state police pilot found two of four all-terrain vehicles reported stolen in the past week in woods off Poors Mill Road in Belfast.

A third stolen ATV was found in Belfast on Tuesday.

“We’re still looking for the other one and we have some pretty good leads,” Chief Deputy Robert Keating said Thursday. “No one has been charged at this point. However, we are looking at some suspects.”

The four four-wheelers were reported stolen from the Route 3 communities of Belmont and Searsmont. Three have been recovered. Authorities also are looking for a dirt bike that was reported stolen Thursday from behind a Belfast business on Route 3.

Keating said the first report of a stolen ATV came from Belmont on Aug. 4. A second report came in the next day from Belmont, a third from Searsmont on Monday and a fourth from Belmont on Wednesday. The ATV reported stolen on Aug. 5 was found abandoned with a broken chain on Banks Road in Belfast on Tuesday.

“Because all the vehicles were taken from the Route 3 area our initial assumption was that somebody was getting them and hauling them out of state,” Keating said. “But when we recovered the one on the Banks Road, our focus became local.”

Keating said Curtis and Deputy Jason Bosco decided to ask the state police for assistance. He said that within a half-hour of going aloft Thursday morning, Curtis spotted two of the missing ATVs on Poors Mill Road.
