SULLIVAN – Three local teenagers survived a slight scare Tuesday evening when their canoe tipped over in Flanders Pond, leaving the group stranded briefly.
James White, 19, had gone for a long distance swim shortly before 7 p.m. and apparently couldn’t make it back.
Two of his friends, Tim Rivers and Kyle Joy, both 19, had paddled out in a canoe to help White back to shore.
At some point, their vessel flipped and all three ended up in the water, according to Dave Simmons with the Maine Warden Service.
Simmons was called for assistance, but by the time he arrived on scene, the three young men had been hauled in by a Flanders Pond resident and his party boat.
Simmons said the good Samaritan, Mike Soule, is often helpful in keeping an eye on the water.
“It was good practice for us,” Simmons said. “We would rather go out and learn everything is OK than to get there and have a real problem.”
