Bangor man’s status critical after accident

BANGOR – A Bangor man was in critical condition at a local hospital Sunday night after suffering serious injuries in a single-vehicle accident on outer Essex Street earlier in the day.

The man’s name was being withheld Sunday, pending notification of family members, Sgt. Bob Bishop of the Bangor Police Department said Sunday.

According to Bishop, the accident occurred at 1:50 a.m. while the man was driving home from work. The 1988 Dodge sedan he was driving left the roadway, and the driver was ejected before striking a stand of trees.

The man, a Bangor resident, was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

“There was absolutely no evidence that alcohol was involved,” Bishop said.

Investigating officer Steve Pelletier reported that it appeared the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel.

The Dodge was demolished, Bishop said. The accident remains under investigation.
