News in brief GUILFORD: STORE BURGLARIZED

Burglars apparently spent a considerable amount of time earlier this week checking doors and windows to a local business before they broke into the building. The Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department hopes that a Route 15 motorist may have seen someone around Herring Bros.’ retail shop late Monday night or early Tuesday morning when the break-in occurred. Based on footprints left behind, two burglars parked a vehicle at a nearby slaughterhouse and walked to the store off Route 15, according to Investigator Allen Emerson of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department. He said the burglars apparently spent a lot of time seeking entry because the snow around the building had been trampled. A small front window was broken to enter the store, he said. Taken from the store were about $200 worth of cigarettes and a cash drawer containing rolled coins and miscellaneous change, Emerson said Thursday. The empty cash drawer was found discarded outside the building. Emerson said he had collected evidence and was investigating the break-in. (Diana Bowley, BDN)
