News in brief EASTPORT: TOWN TO KICK OFF NEW YEAR WITH SARDINE DROP

A 6 1/2-foot-long sardine, complete with a lighted mooring buoy in its mouth, will be lowered at midnight tonight from the Tides Institute and Museum of Art to ring in the New Year. At 11 p.m., a lighted Canadian maple leaf will be dropped in honor of Canada’s New Year’s celebration across the border. Father Time and Baby New Year also will make an appearance at the event being held at the museum, which is the four-story 1887 old bank building.
