News in brief DOVER-FOXCROFT: EXTRA PATROLS ON DUTY NEW YEAR’S EVE

Although the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department will have extra patrols on duty for New Year’s Eve, it is expected to be a quiet evening. Sheriff John Goggin has found that motorists are a bit more cautious about drinking and driving on such a high-visibility holiday. Those who do imbibe are relying more on designated drivers, which is exactly the aim of police, he said. “It’s just the younger group that we still have a concern about,” Goggin said Friday. Goggin said his department once again will provide a free ride to any motorist within the county who becomes intoxicated and has no designated driver. “We’d be very happy to give anybody a ride in the county who is in a situation where they find themselves intoxicated and they have driven someplace and they can’t get home,” he said.
