News in brief BANGOR: BOMB SQUAD HANDLES FIREWORKS

A Bangor man alerted Bangor police early Friday morning that he thought his truck contained some type of explosive device. The man had given his niece and her boyfriend a ride in his truck on Thursday night. The next morning he noticed a bag in the back seat that had not been there before, describing the contents as “rolled up cardboard with fuses,” according to police reports. Parking on Court Street, the man went into the Bangor police station to report the bag. Officers immediately notified nearby buildings, such as the Bangor Y and Penobscot County Jail. The buildings were not evacuated, but people inside were instructed to move away from the side nearest the potential explosives. The driver of the truck suspected the bag belonged to his niece’s boyfriend, a Brewer man in his 20s, according to police. Working with Brewer law enforcement, officers were able to locate the man, who told them the bag contained fireworks. Bangor police activated its Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team to safely dispose of the fireworks by detonating them at a designated site in Bangor. Although fireworks are illegal, police do not expect to charge anyone involved because of the level of cooperation exhibited, according to Bangor Lt. Tim Reed.
