Livingston Taylor to kick off Brewer Theatre concert series

BREWER – Boston-based singer and songwriter Livingston Taylor returns to the Brewer Middle School stage at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, to open this year’s Brewer Theatre concert series.

Taylor, who will release a new CD this fall, has had a number of Top 40 hits and recorded several songs with his brother, James, including “Boatman” in his Grammy Award-winning “Hourglass” album.

Tickets for the concert are $20 and are available at The Grasshopper Shop in Bangor, at Brewer Middle School, 5 Somerset St., and at the door.

One of music’s brightest new voices will make her Eastern Maine debut as Jonatha Brooke, fresh off a European tour where she opened for Joe Cocker, performs at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21. Her newest CD, “Back in the Circus,” has drawn rave reviews and earned her appearances on “Late Night with David Letterman,” “The Late Show” with Conan O’Brien and “Last Call” with Carson Daly. Rolling Stone magazine said she is “clear folk clarity cut with pure rock opacity, her songs evoke Virginia Woolf’s personal odysseys and Audrey Hepburn’s rich subtlety.” Concert tickets are $20 and available at Brewer Middle School and The Grasshopper Shop.

Lucy Kaplansky started in the music business performing in bars in the Chicago area. From there she was off to New York where she wrote and recorded with Shawn Colvin, Nanci Griffith, John Gorka and Suzanne Vega. Her latest CD, “The Red Thread,” inspired by the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and her adoption of a baby from China, has been critically acclaimed and has led to appearances on “The Early Show” on CBS, NPR’s “Morning Edition.” Her music also was used on the NBC series, “Ed.” Kaplansky will perform at 8 p.m. March 3. Tickets will go on sale in January.

It wouldn’t be spring without David Mallett’s annual Brewer concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 8. Maine’s legendary singer and songwriter has been writing music for more than 30 years and has seen his songs recorded by everyone from Peter, Paul and Mary to Alison Kraus. Tickets for the concert will go on sale in February.

The Brewer Concert series concludes on May 6 with a performance by Maine native Kate Schrock. The Westbrook-based singer has earned critical praise for a series of self-produced albums. She performed this summer with a number of Maine artists, and with one of the late Bob Marley’s Wailers. Tickets for the concert will go on sale in the spring of 2006.
