Orrington neighbors hurt in ATV accident

ORRINGTON – Speed and driver inexperience were contributing factors in an ATV accident Monday that sent two people to the hospital.

Ellen Fraughton, 43, of Orrington was driving the ATV down Settles Way with neighbor Mary Severance, 14, as a passenger when she lost control of the vehicle, Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Doug Smith said.

The ATV was going down a hill at a high rate of speed and Fraughton lost control, driving off into a field, where the ATV struck a bush and rolled over several times. Both people were thrown from the ATV.

Severance was wearing a helmet and suffered minor injuries. She was treated at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and later released. Fraughton wasn’t wearing a helmet and suffered injuries, including to her back. She was still at EMMC Monday evening, Smith said.

The accident occurred at 5:12 p.m. and is still under investigation, although Smith said charges are likely.
