News in brief AUGUSTA: SENATORS SUPPORT CLIMATE AGREEMENT

A move to require federal approval of an agreement between New England governors and Atlantic Canadian premieres in response to global climate change has stalled at the State House. Lawmakers last week considered a resolution, sponsored by Rep. Henry Joy, R-Crystal, that would have required federal Congressional approval of the 2001 agreement, which some conservatives criticize as an “illegal treaty.” State representatives passed the resolution with no discussion, but senators have “indefinitely postponed” the measure, all but ensuring that it will not be approved. Monday, a spokesman from the Department of Environmental Protection said that such a resolution might stand in the way of implementing the state’s new greenhouse gas reduction plan which, while an independent state law, was designed to meet the goals outlined in the 2001 agreement. More than 50 strategies to significantly reduce Maine’s emission of greenhouse gases will be considered by lawmakers and state agencies over several years.
