News in brief MAINE AUDUBON SEEKS OWL VOLUNTEERS

“Citizen scientists” are invited to participate in a study of owl populations throughout northern Maine in late March and early April. Volunteers will be asked to walk a local road between midnight and 4 a.m., first passively listening for owl calls, then playing recordings of local species and listening for responses. Volunteers are needed in the Fort Kent, Presque Isle, Houlton, Calais, Eastport and Machias areas. Prior scientific or bird-watching experience is not necessary, as Maine Audubon will provide some training. More than 200 people have been a part of the Maine Owl Monitoring Project since it began in 2002. For information, contact project coordinator Susan Gallo at 781-2330, ext. 216.
