Let’s make a difference

We Americans are an extravagant lot; it shows more at this time of year than any other, with the manner in which we celebrate the holiday. That is not to say there aren’t other days (New Year’s and the Fourth of July) with exorbitant amounts of money for fireworks and other things.

Then there are the everyday expenditures for the likes of tattoos, body piercings (tongue, ears, lips, nose, navel, whatever), brand-name clothing, vacations to tropical lands, cruises and tickets to baseball games.

We spend more money on trivia than people in other countries spend merely to survive. Food, water, medicines, clothing, decent housing; all are vital to maintain life. They are things many of us take for granted.

We need to take a long, hard look at ourselves and realize that we could make a big difference to the needy, not only in foreign lands but right here, in our own back yard, as well.
