Brewer food drive to offer donors’ gifts

BREWER – Each year, the city hosts a holiday food drive, but this year people who give will have a chance to win a gift for themselves.

The city will be collecting nonperishable food and cash donations in support of the Brewer Food Cupboard and the Brewer Community Service Council. Items may be dropped off at the stage at Brewer Auditorium or in bins inside City Hall.

Drew Sachs, the city’s economic development director, said Friday a $50 gift certificate for the Muddy Rudder restaurant in Brewer is being offered as part of a raffle designed to serve as an incentive for giving.

“For each 10 nonperishable food items donated and-or $5 in donated funds, I will provide each of you with one entry into a raffle to win the gift certificate,” Sachs said. “It’s a way to do something good for others and have a chance to do something good for yourself as well.”

Cash or check donations should be left with Sachs and should be made out to “City of Brewer – Holiday Food Drive.”

The city is encouraging each municipal department to participate in the food drive.

Last year, the city and the School Department collected more than 6,000 items and several thousand dollars for those in need.

“I’d really like to break that record this year – people in need are counting on us,” Sachs said.
