Rockland council seats open in November

ROCKLAND – Several elective city positions are open to competition this November, including two three-year seats on the City Council.

Nomination papers for the positions will be available Friday at City Hall.

The deadline for filing papers is 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20.

The terms of Mayor Edward Mazurek and Councilor Mark Curtis both expire this year, and neither councilor plans to seek re-election, according to City Clerk Stuart Sylvester on Wednesday.

Mazurek is seeking the House District 62 seat now held by Republican Rep. Deborah McNeil, who is in her third term. McNeil has taken a position in Sen. Olympia Snowe’s office and will not run again. Mazurek is running on the Democratic ticket.

In SAD 5, directors William Sternberg and Jeffrey Boggs both have three-year seats that will be up for grabs. Neither board member could be reached Wednesday for comment.

A five-year seat on the Rockland Port District, now held by Richard Spear, who is chairman, will also be open to competition. He could not be reached for comment.

The one-year seats for election warden and ward clerk, now held by Adele Faber and Roger Brochu, respectively, are available. Neither could be reached for comment.
