Power use surges in bitter N.E. cold

PORTLAND – Bitter cold weather pushed power usage to record levels across the Northeast, and electricity suppliers asked customers to voluntarily conserve power. But a cold snap for the ages neared an end Friday as temperatures slowly crept above zero and into the single digits from Buffalo to Bangor.

Winter power usage beat records in New York and all of New England, and electrical use was expected to be at or near record levels again Friday.
