Stay out of drafts, mother always said, but this time, as last time, there isn’t much hope of doing so.
Two reports on Nov. 3, one in the United States and the other in England, pointed out a Web site, since removed, from the Pentagon looking for applications for people to serve on local draft boards. Posted now on the www.sss.gov site, the notice now says there will be no college deferments and, in keeping with the Vietnam War “loophole,” Canada and the United States have signed a “Smart Border Declaration.”
In addition to keeping terrorists out, the declaration would keep those avoiding the draft “in.” The declaration, some 30 points, has a “pre-clearance agreement” for people coming and going and an “advance passenger information” section and a “joint removals of deportees” clause as well.
Charles Rangel, author of H.R. 163, speaking in response to “beef up our presence in Iraq,” says “at some point, we’re going to need more troops, and at that point the only way to get there, will be a return to the draft.”
