HoltraChem hearing on corrective study

ORRINGTON – The HoltraChem Manufacturing Site Corrective Measures Study will be the topic of discussion during a public hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Center Drive School.

The 162-page revised Corrective Measures Study was submitted to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in September and is available at the Orrington Public Library, through the Department of Environmental Protection in Augusta or on the DEP Web site. The study is a document that reviews and weighs the pros and cons of the various cleanup options for the HoltraChem site.

HoltraChem Manufacturing Co. declared bankruptcy in 2000, but Mallinckrodt Inc., a Missouri pharmaceutical company and previous owner of the Orrington facility, agreed to take some responsibility for the cleanup.

Public comment on the study will be taken before the DEP or EPA make their decision on whether to endorse the study.

The letter and the study are available online at www.state.me.us/dep/rwm/holtrachem.
