Head-on vehicle crash leaves woman injured

SOUTH THOMASTON – A local woman apparently suffered minor injuries Wednesday in a head-on crash on Route 73.

Mildred E. French, 66, of South Thomaston was taken by ambulance to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport, according to a report filed by Knox County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Justin Twitchell. French was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said Friday.

French was driving a 1997 Chevrolet sedan north on Route 73 when a 2001 Kia sedan being driven south by William L. Sawyer, 16, of South Thomaston drifted over the centerline and hit French’s car head-on.

Sawyer was not hurt in the 1:44 p.m. crash, according to the report.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. The report does not indicate whether either driver was charged.

French’s car had $8,000 damage, while Sawyer’s vehicle had $5,000 in damage.
