PORTLAND – July was a record-breaker for the Maine Turnpike, with nearly 6.2 million vehicles traveling the highway, officials said Tuesday.
An average of 199,815 vehicles used the turnpike each day in July, beating the record set last August by nearly 2,000 vehicles a day, said Paul Violette, executive director of the Maine Turnpike Authority.
The busiest section of the turnpike was between Saco’s Exit 5 and Scarborough’s Exit 6, with traffic volume averaging 84,000 a day.
Violette doesn’t expect that record will stand for long.
“We have every reason to expect that the month of August will set yet another all-time monthly traffic record,” he said.
