Workplace accident injures GE employee

BANGOR – An industrial accident at the General Electric facility on Maine Avenue Monday morning has left a Corinth man seriously injured.

Vinal Speed, described as a long-service machinist for the company by Plant Manager David Cox, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition.

The nature of Speed’s injuries could not be determined.

GE is currently working with representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and local authorities to determine how the accident occurred, Cox said. Details were not available Wednesday.

“We make safety a top priority and we’re working with OSHA to get to the bottom of this accident,” Cox said outside his office Wednesday afternoon.

The incident is being investigated by OSHA’s Portland office, according to Supervisor Bill Coffin. The office sent a compliance officer to the plant on Monday to conduct an investigation.

The company has been in close contact with the family since the accident, Cox said.

“We’re working with them to help them through this difficult period,” he said.
