Michaud appointed to small-business seat

WASHINGTON – Freshman U.S. Rep. Michael H. Michaud has been appointed to the U.S. House’s Small Business Committee.

The committee will be responsible for the Small Business Administration’s three-year reauthorization this year. Currently, 61 percent of people in Maine are employed in small businesses, which comprise 99 percent of all businesses in Maine.

“Small business is the backbone of our economy. I am very excited by this newest committee assignment. I look forward to working with other members of the Small Business Committee to pass legislation that helps small businesses,” Michaud said.

Michaud also was awarded a seat on the Subcommittee on Highways, Transit and Pipelines, which will handle the reauthorization of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, or TEA-21. The TEA-21 legislation authorizes the level of federal funding for federal highway, highway safety and transit programs for the next six years. In addition, the subcommittee has jurisdiction over certain provisions of the Clean Air Act relating to air-quality issues.

Michaud also will serve on the Railroads and Economic Development Subcommittees.

“I am fortunate to receive these tremendous committee assignments. While there are many challenges ahead, I look forward to fighting for the people of Maine.” Michaud said.

The congressman previously secured seats on the Transportation and Infrastructure and Veterans Affairs committees.
