To save a language

In December I sent a press release to the Bangor Daily News’ Calais office, all three Bangor television stations and two local newspapers. I included information about the students of Indian Township School presenting a Christmas play performed totally in the Passamaquoddy language. I also included the news that the students had raised more than $600, which later swelled to almost $1,400, for the American Cancer Society.

I find it sad that neither of these events were noteworthy enough for coverage by the BDN or the television newscasts, yet our inclusion on the state’s list of “priority schools” was. We may not know language arts, but we are working to save a language that is older than Maine or its Department of Education. We may not know math, but we know that $1,380.51 is a lot of money for kids to raise for the American Cancer Society. Fortunately, the students of Indian Township School know some things that can’t be measured by the MEA test.
