AUGUSTA – The Maine Warden Service, responding to a string of snowmobile fatalities this winter, said Thursday it will increase patrols along trails over the holiday weekend.
Col. Tim Peabody said all available wardens will be put on duty over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, traditionally a popular time for snowmobiling.
Eight people have already died this winter while snowmobiling in Maine. The state record of 12 fatalities occurred in four previous winters.
Peabody said he hopes increased patrols on Maine’s 13,000 miles of trails will encourage safe driving.
