Audit for SAD 50 shows $30,000 in irregular deposits

THOMASTON – A recent SAD 50 audit has shown nearly $30,000 in questionable deposits made in the food service account, according to the district superintendent.

SAD 50’s director of accounting and food services was placed on paid administrative leave Dec. 9, and shortly thereafter, an audit was requested in connection with her temporary departure.

Kathleen Wright, a district employee for 10 years, remains on paid leave, Superintendent Judy Harvey said Monday.

“This is not money missing,” Harvey stressed. “It is money we’re questioning.”

The audit report, conducted by certified public accountant Kimberly J. Russell of Windham, was ordered Dec. 12 and completed Friday.

The SAD 50 board of directors has been informed of the results, Harvey said.

The audit report draws no conclusions, according to the superintendent.

The audit focused on comparing receipts to deposits in district accounts, excluding the food service account, Harvey said, and a similar review of the food service transactions.

The result of the audit shows “questionable items in deposits” for the food service account, Harvey said, declining to be more specific. The amount in question is $29,428, she said.

Thomaston police have been informed of the progress of the audit, but no legal action has been taken.

The matter has been referred to the district’s attorneys at Drummond, Woodsum & McMahon of Portland, Harvey said.

Wright, who resides in Hope, is paid a salary of $37,440 annually. Wright has been unable to be reached for comment because she has an unpublished telephone number.
