Pittsfield area firefighters respond to blaze at ceramics shop

PALMYRA – Pittsfield, Hartland and St. Albans firefighters were called to a fire at Katy’s Carousel, a ceramics business on Route 2, at about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday night. Four years ago, a house burned down at the same location.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to close down the highway while firefighters conducted a search of the business for possible victims and fought the smoky blaze.

The search did not find anyone inside the building and was initiated because a neighbor reported to fire personnel that someone might be inside.

The first firefighters at the scene reported that the fire appeared to be in the ceiling area of the wooden structure. Within a half-hour, reported Palmyra Fire Chief Don Chute, the fire was under control. Chute is the fire chief in Palmyra, but the town does not have its own fire department and relies on fire contracts with neighboring communities.

Two rescue units, three pumpers and two tankers responded to the scene. Detroit Fire Department members provided mutual aid in Pittsfield during the fire.

Chute said he had requested that a fire investigator from the state fire marshall’s office come to the scene to determine the cause of the blaze.

Firefighters fought a house fire at the same location on March 5, 1998. The home involved was owned by Owen Tracy and Pamela Estabrook and the fire appeared to have started in the basement and quickly swept through the home, destroying it.

It was unclear Tuesday night if the same people owned the shop.
