Granite lawn sculpture missing in Ellsworth

ELLSWORTH – A granite lawn sculpture worth $1,000 has been reported missing from a local museum, according to police.

The 150-pound sculpture of a fruit basket disappeared from the Black House on Route 172 earlier this month, according to Ellsworth police Officer Kelvin Mote. He said the museum staff members did not report the missing sculpture until Friday because they assumed someone on the staff had removed it so it could be cleaned, he said.

Mote said Monday that the sculpture is about 2 feet tall and 2 feet in diameter. There are other versions of the sculpture still at the museum, he said.

“There’s four of them,” Mote said. “There are only three of them now.”

Mote said that when he searched the property he found no sign of the sculpture or any trace of how it was removed. The case is under investigation, he said.
