Affordable health care topic of Belfast meeting

BELFAST – Maine House Speaker Michael Saxl, D-Portland, will speak on affordable health care at the monthly meeting of the Waldo County Hot Stove League.

The meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 18, at Senior Spectrum on Merriam Road.

Saxl will review legislation aimed at providing a voluntary, state-sponsored medical insurance plan designed to be affordable to employees in small businesses.

The Portland lawmaker, who served as speaker of the House in the 120th Legislature, introduced the legislation last winter to provide an alternative insurance program for workers in businesses that have fewer than 50 employees.

The public is invited to attend the meeting and discuss issues with the five-member Waldo County legislative delegation. Members of the delegation and others who are seeking statewide office from the county will attend.

For more information, contact Rep. Joe Brooks, D-Winterport, at home, 223-5041, or in Belfast, 338-1190.
