On Feb. 15, approximately 300 supporters of the mentally ill of Maine gathered in the State House Hall of Flags to voice their opposition to the governor’s and Legislature’s proposed cuts in the mental health budget. It is sad to know their audience was not even there to hear them. The governor was simply not there. Many of our legislators were on their way to the Quebec Winter Carnival.
If we suggest they place a higher priority on a winter carnival than the state’s mentally ill, they will kick and scream foul. But what else could it be? When a man says he used part of his home (cardboard) to make a sign for that rally, therein lies a message they had better hear – and clearly. Do not cut the mental health budget. Increase it.
