Broncs get defensive, upset PI

PRESQUE ISLE – Justin DiFrederico poured in 20 points, including a 6-for-7 effort from the 3-point arc, to lift Hampden Academy to a big basketball win, 54-39, over the Presque Isle boys Saturday.

Ben Keller added 18 points for the Broncos, including 12 during a second quarter in which Hampden outscored Presque Isle 22-16 to build a 32-23 advantage. The Bronco defense forced 18 turnovers and held the Wildcats to five points in the final period.

Nick Casavant led the Wildcats with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Mount Desert Island led 37-28 at the end of three, but Bangor stormed back behind Erinne Magee’s three 3-pointers to take a one point lead with 1:30 to go.

Shelley Gott led the Trojans with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Horton tallied 11 points. Bracey Barker, a 6-foot-1 guard, added a school-record eight blocked shots.

Magee finished with 15 points and Katherine Miller tossed in 12 for the Rams.

At Sukee Arena in Winslow, Greg Taylor racked up two goals and an assist as Hampden stopped Messalonskee of Oakland.

Greg Brown chipped in with a goal and an assist, Adam Standley added a goal, and Mike Brooks, Pat Bailey and Colin Ingram logged an assist apiece. Garrett MacGowen turned away 13 of 14 shots for the 6-5 Broncos.

For 0-10 Messalonskee, Adam Carton scored on a pass from Anthony Kadnor. Ben Conti tallied 22 saves on 26 shots.

Gardiner 9, Old Town 2

At Alfond Arena in Orono, Kevin McKay scored three goals and assisted on two to propel the Tigers to victory.

Ben Kramer provided two goals and an assist, while Ben Brown and Justin Stangel notched a goal and an assist for Gardiner. Ken Jackson and Justin Labourdais added one goal each.

Spencer Lahaie made eight saves on 10 shots.

Josh Fournier and Meghan King scored the goals for Old Town, with Nick St. Louis adding an assist. J.P. Stowe piled up 52 saves on 61 shots for the Indians.

Bangor 1, John Bapst 0

At Sawyer Arena in Bangor, Kyle Baker fired in a goal at the 7:16 mark of the second period to boost Bangor by John Bapst.

John Huhn and Ben Payson assisted Baker’s score. Dominic Dinardo stopped all 22 shots he faced for the 4-5-1 Rams.

Dan Leighton made 21 saves on 22 shots for the 7-5 Crusaders.

Orono 12, Kents Hill 3

At Alfond Sports Complex in Readfield, Mike Merritt scored five goals while Will Toner added two plus three assists as the unbeaten Red Riots stayed that way and outshot Kents Hill 47-14.

Nick Dwyer scored two goals and Pat Skall had a goal and four assists for the 11-0 Red Riots. Paul Pangburn had a goal and an assist, and Brano Srnka had one goal. Casey Hale saved 11 of 14 shots.

For the 2-5 Huskies, D.J. McNaulton, Justin Manchuck, and Dan Murphy each scored a goal. Travis Hall assisted on two goals and Mike Whynott had 35 saves.
