Truck rollover blocks Route 182 for an hour

FRANKLIN – A tractor-trailer rig rolled over Monday afternoon at the intersection of routes 200 and 182, slowing traffic for much of the afternoon and blocking the road completely for an hour.

The driver of the rig, Patrick Cogswell, 32, of New Brunswick, was traveling down Route 200, according to State Trooper Barry Curtis.

Cogswell had been diverted onto the road because of a rollover earlier in the day on Route 9; he was unfamiliar with the road.

“He thought the road went straight there and then realized that it was a T intersection,” Curtis said. “He tried to make that left turn anyway, and that’s when he rolled over.”

His load, 8-foot-long, untreated railroad ties, was dumped when the truck rolled over. With the ties and the truck in the road, most of Route 182 was blocked, making slow going for other diverted traffic coming down the road.

“Everything was being shipped down from Route 9. That’s why he was coming down 200 to Route 182,” Curtis said. “When he rolled over, we lost 182. We were running out of roads.”

Emergency crews were able to open one lane in order to keep traffic flowing, Curtis said. They had to close the road completely for about one hour, however, while they righted the vehicle. A pulp loader was brought in pick up the railroad ties.

Cogswell was not injured in the accident. There was extensive damage to the cab, Curtis said, which he termed a total loss.
