Death of Standish man still under investigation

AUGUSTA – An autopsy Sunday failed to determine the cause of death of a Standish man who was found off the side of state Route 25.

Cindy Elliott, spokeswoman for the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office, said toxicology tests will be performed to determine how Andrew Smith, 19, died. The results of those tests should be available in a couple of weeks, Elliott said.

Smith, who was from the Steep Falls community of Standish, was found at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday by a woman who was driving on Route 25. She flagged down a passing Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department vehicle that happened to be driving by.

Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said Smith’s death has “suspicious overtones.”

Both the state police and the Sheriff’s Department investigated the area for the remainder of the day. They blocked traffic on heavily traveled Route 25.

State police Sgt. Matthew Stewart said investigators were particularly interested in foot tracks that appeared in the snow near the body.

Neighbors were shaken by the death in this rural town west of Portland.

“It seems odd it’s so close to home, and a little scary,” said Mark Chamberlain, who lives nearby.
