Man indicted in Bangor rape, kidnapping

BANGOR – A Penobscot County grand jury handed up indictments Monday against a man accused of raping a Bangor woman two years ago.

The jury returned six indictments against 35-year-old Mark Martin of Bangor and Colorado, charging him with four counts of gross sexual assault, kidnapping and burglary for the April 17, 1999, attack.

Martin remains held in Penobscot County Jail.

He came to the attention of Bangor police last month after they were notified by Colorado authorities that Martin may be in the Bangor area. Colorado police were looking for Martin for questioning in a sexual assault there.

When Bangor police located Martin at his mother’s apartment, they took a DNA sample and compared those results to evidence taken from the scene of the earlier Bangor attack, which occurred at the Granada apartments.

Police say the DNA matched.

Also indicted Monday was Margaret Bonville, 31, of Casco who has been charged in connection with an Oct. 25 break-in at a Clifton home that was ransacked and a fire left burning in the kitchen.

Indicted on charges of arson and burglary, Bonville had been previously arrested in early February in Portland where investigators had been waiting for her outside a bank. She was arrested on a 1994 warrant, charging her with failure to appear in court.

In October, Bonville had been hitchhiking from Perry to Bangor when authorities say she entered an elderly woman’s home on Route 9 and ransacked it. She left papers and bills burning on the stove in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence of the burglary, according to investigators.
