Ethical purchasing

The Maine Ethical Purchasing Bill (LR 178701) is soon to be introduced to the Maine Legislature. If enacted, it would ensure that all businesses in Maine, in order to bid for state contracts, will comply with the Maine Purchasing Code of Conduct. The code speaks to the atrocities that many workers in the world (those who make much of what we consume) are subjected to. The people of Maine would be saying that conditions such as the misuse of child labor, unimaginable dangerous and harsh working environments, long, grueling hours for poverty wages and the denial of medical services and basic human rights are not acceptable.

By supporting this bill we have a wonderful opportunity to increase compassion and justice, and decrease human cruelty and suffering. Those workers but for fortune could be you or me; those children could be our children. Contact your legislators, talk with others, call PICA (creators of the Clean Clothes Campaign and members of the Clean Clothes Alliance) at 947-4203 for more information.
