Deer Isle law enforcers seek clues to tree theft

DEER ISLE – The trees outside a Deer Isle home received some unwanted pruning recently.

Dan Foss called the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department at 5:56 p.m. Friday to report that two mature apple trees had been cut down some time during the past month and taken from the property of a home he cared for Kings Row.

According to Foss, the larger logs were hauled off while the smaller limbs were left on the ground.

The owner of the home is Leon Goldin of New York City. Foss said he had spoken with Goldin, who had asked him to report the incident to police. Deputy Jeffrey McFarland investigated the area but found no tracks in the snow. McFarland determined that the property damage must have occurred before the snowfall that occurred the week the report was filed. The value of the trees was estimated at $100 each. There were no suspects as of Sunday afternoon.
