Sherman man killed while grooming trail

SHERMAN – A man grooming a snowmobile trail was killed late Wednesday afternoon when he was crossing a road and his snowmobile was struck by a vehicle.

Wilfred Oroak, 81, of Sherman was dead when police arrived at the scene on the Golden Ridge Road. Police said the cause of death was severe chest trauma.

Using a snowmobile owned by the Molunkus Stream Snowmobile Club, Oroak was grooming trails when he tried to cross the road just after 4 p.m. He was struck by a 1989 van driven by John Dreisch, 73, of Sherman, Trooper Joshua D’Angelo said Thursday.

Dreisch was traveling east on the Golden Ridge Road, and Oroak was traveling south grooming a trail. Dreisch told police that Oroak apparently did not see the van coming and entered the roadway just at dusk.

The snowmobile, which was destroyed in the accident, was struck broadside. Dreisch was not injured. Damage to his van was estimated at $2,000.

D’Angelo said Oroak was grooming the trail with just a regular touring sled. The police officer said there would be no prosecution in the incident.
