Green in OT win vs. Bears > Dartmouth edges 11th-ranked Maine

HANOVER, N.H. – Pete Summerfelt fired a shot from 35 feet away that was apparently deflected past screened University of Maine goaltender Mike Morrison with 1:20 remaining in overtime Saturday night as Dartmouth shocked the 11th-ranked Black Bears 2-1 in Division I men’s hockey action at Thompson Arena.

UMaine, playing the final game on a three-game, non-league road trip, slipped to 5-4-3 with the loss and went 1-1-1 on the swing. The Big Green improved to 2-5.

Coach Shawn Walsh’s Bears, who had beaten Brown 6-2 on Friday night, now have a record of 0-2-3 in overtime games this season. UMaine had been unbeaten (3-0-2) in its previous five games.

Dartmouth generated numerous scoring chances, outshooting the Bears 38-32 while holding UMaine without a shot on goal in the extra period. Nick Boucher backstopped the victory, recording 31 saves to outduel Morrison, who finished with 36 saves for the Bears.

The teams battled through a scoreless first period during which UMaine outshot Dartmouth 9-6. The hosts finally got on the scoreboard with 4:55 remaining in the second period.

With the Bears’Cliff Loya in the penalty box for roughing, Dartmouth defenseman Trevor Byrne took a point-to-point pass from blue line partner Summerfelt and whistled a slap shot from the right point that got past Morrison. It was Byrne’s first goal of the season.

UMaine equalized midway through the third period, also on the power play.

Doug Janik fired a shot from the left point that Chris Heisten deflected past Boucher at the 9:44 mark, making it 1-1. It was the second tally of the season for Heisten.

The Bears now have scored two goals or less eight times this season.

UMaine returns to action Friday at Alfond Arena in Orono against Hockey East rival Northeastern.
