SeDoMoCha addition topic of public hearing

DOVER-FOXCROFT- The need for a four-room addition at SeDoMoCha Middle School will be the subject of a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, in the middle school library.

A referendum vote on the proposed 4,472-square-foot addition will be conducted Nov. 7.

The four-classroom addition represents the space the district needs to house another grade level that previously attended the Mayo Street School.

Directors closed the Mayo Street School because of the extensive repairs that were needed for code compliance. Rather than invest $1.2 million to bring the aging school up to code, directors agreed to recommend an addition to the middle school at far less cost.

A four-room addition will reduce the cost by more than half for both the state and district while improving the educational program and environment for fifth-grade pupils, according to Superintendent Donald Siviski.

The state has approved $280,000 for the addition and another $120,000 in interest-free loans, Siviski said recently. The addition is expected to cost between $480,000 and $560,000 depending upon the final design specifications.
