Congratulations on your front-page article, “Schools in quest of a few good men” (BDN, Sept. 16-17). In the 1960s, with nearly one-third of my 34 fourth-graders, fatherless boys, from divorce or death, I pleaded for men teachers in lower grades. One principal, and perhaps one physical education teacher just was not enough to be father figures to around 132 fourth-graders, with more boys than girls. Schools need men in early grades as well as women. Patricia H. Thurston Bass Harbor
