Bangor Daily changes ‘net service offer

BANGOR – The Bangor Daily News, which offers Internet service to its customers, has changed its provider to Prexar from Infinet effective today.

More than 900 people in the Bangor area are signed up with the Bangor Daily News Internet Service and have been sent an e-mail notifying them of the switch, said Jack Keefe, manager of BDN Internet Service. The customers can accept the change or seek another Internet service provider, he said.

“We’re trying to move all our customers over to them [Prexar],” Keefe said.

An additional 1,200 Internet users were signed up with BDN Internet Service and its former service provider, Infinet, through an agreement with Northeast Publishing in Aroostook, Keefe said. Northeast Publishing is not continuing the arrangement with Infinet, but has not yet determined to which service company it will be switching.

BDN Internet Services and Prexar are working to set up a toll-free Internet access dial-in telephone line that will enable customers from throughout the state to sign up for Web access, Keefe said. The recent strike by two Verizon Communications unions delayed installation of the line, but it should be hooked up by the beginning of October, he said.

Prexar, a subsidiary of Aliant of New Brunswick, began operations in Maine in December when it acquired AcadiaNet in Ellsworth. Since then, it has purchased twosmaller Internet service providers.

The company is moving its area headquarters from Ellsworth to Summer Street in Bangor within the next month. It will be housed on the top floor of the former Bean and Conquest building.

Prexar provides a range of business and consumer products from dial-up and high-speed access, Web site design and hosting, networking solutions, domain registration and site activity analysis.
