National retailer Eddie Bauer, with a clothing line similar to L.L. Bean, opened a store Thursday in the Bangor Mall.
Best Buy, a consumer electronics store, will open at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at Southgate Plaza in the middle-mall area.
Seattle-based Eddie Bauer is not worried about opening its second store in Maine and competing with L.L. Bean, said Bangor Mall store manager Heidi Dellaire. The other store is at South Portland’s Maine Mall.
“I think what we offer fits in with the Maine lifestyle,” she said. “We have a good customer base from our catalog sales.”
Being in Bangor should deter people from driving to Portland to shop at Eddie Bauer, Dellaire said.
Eddie Bauer carries men’s and women’s sportswear, luggage, backpacks and some travel gear at its Bangor Mall store. Other products can be ordered through the catalog desk located within the mall location.
Best Buy tore down the former Service Merchandise building to put up a new store that would be better wired for electricity, said spokeswoman Connie Stelter.
The 30,000-square-foot building will display and sell home and office equipment, consumer electronics, appliances and entertainment software, Stelter said.
Best Buy has hired about 100 full- and part-time workers at “competitive” wages, Stelter said. Pay rates vary from $6.50 to $13 per hour, depending on the position, she said.
The Bangor store is one of about 60 new Best Buy stores the Minneapolis-based company will open this year, Stelter said.
