Pease explored as alternative to Logan

NEWINGTON, N.H. – Massachusetts Port Authority officials are exploring ways to use Pease International Tradeport to relieve some of the congestion at Boston’s Logan Airport.

Massport officials toured the tradeport and Pease Airport on Wednesday. According to Pease Development Authority director George Meyer, Massport is searching for regional airports that could handle some of Logan’s cargo and charter flights. It also is looking for a place where airlines can park planes, he said.

Massport hopes to construct another runway at Logan, but doing so would eliminate areas used by cargo operations.

“Cargo and charter flights were their primary interest,” Meyer said.

“That’s good for us, since we’ll be able to collect fees on all of that.”

Meyer said Massport officials were surprised at the extent and pace of Pease development and the possibility for expansion. He said Massport has no immediate plans to shift traffic to Pease, but could do so in the future. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we talk with them again before too long,” he said.

“We need a regional approach. That means everyone must pull together.”
