150-year-old elm tree dedicated at UMaine

ORONO — A 150-year-old American elm tree outside Hitchner Hall on the University of Maine campus was formally dedicated on Wednesday to the retired UM professor credited with saving its life.

The tree attracted considerable attention last year when an initial plan to renovate and expand Hitchner Hall called for the tree’s removal.

On Wednesday, the tree, which was spared in a revised building plan, was dedicated to Professor Emeritus Richard Campana, who developed a method that is credited with saving the tree from Dutch elm disease in the 1970s.
