Horse rescued from well euthanized due to injuries

WALDOBORO — A horse was euthanized two days after falling into a well at Storer Mountain Farm, an owner confirmed Friday.

Susan Morris was emotional about the loss of Cider, a 29-year-old horse that she and her husband, John Morris, have had since he was a 6-month-old foal.

Cider was nearly 16 hands high, Susan Morris said, explaining that a hand equals 4 inches. He was three-quarters Arab and one-quarter Morgan.

The animal suffered such trauma from the accident that, even though there were no broken bones or apparent injuries, the muscles reacted adversely, Morris said, adding, “He never would have been able to walk again.”

Morris speculated that Cider was prancing around the farm “in exuberance” because of the spring day, fell, and as he was getting up, knocked the “big heavy cover” off the well and his hind end slipped into the water hole. They found nothing wrong with the cover, she said.

When Morris was doing chores around the farm Wednesday morning, she discovered Cider in the well about 7:30 a.m., according to previous reports.

On Friday, Morris said that Cider likely fell into the well that morning because if he had been there all night “he never would have made it overnight.”

Waldoboro police, fire and highway personnel and the animal control officer responded to the rescue call. They pumped out the well.

Two veterinarians from Augusta arrived and a crane was used to lift Cider out of the well after he was given an injection to calm him.

During a telephone interview Friday, Morris said the family has another horse who is “very desolate right now.”
