Former USM player making comeback

WATERBURY, Conn. – A minor league baseball player who suffered serious head injuries when he was hit by a piece of a broken bat last season is attempting a comeback.

Jeff Keaveny, 24, has been invited to the Minnesota Twins minor league training camp, the Waterbury Spirit announced Wednesday.

Keaveny, who played at the University of Southern Maine, was a first baseman for the Spirit of the Independent League when he was injured during a game in Allentown, Pa., Aug. 9.

He was charging for a pop fly when a jagged piece of the bat hit him in the face and the barrel slammed him on the side of the head, dropping him to the ground.

Keaveney underwent four hours of emergency surgery the next day to relieve pressure on his brain, but awoke from the procedure unable to talk.

Keaveney, of Fort Myers, Fla., has been in rehabilitation and speech therapy since.
